BikeMovement began in 2006 as “an initiative to engage open conversation regarding their visions and perspectives for the church,” led by young adults who biked across the United States over 7 weeks that summer. Camping and being hosted in churches and homes along their route, the group facilitated these conversations to “cultivate a relevant community through conversation.” From their energy, a documentary and small group curriculum were developed, among other fruits.
In 2007, a group of six decided to embark on a similar journey through Southeast Asia, exploring the role of North Americans in the global church and the nature of the Mennonite church in that region. BikeMovement Asia spent two months traveling through four countries, with the goal of “realizing global community through intercultural engagement.”
Together with other efforts, these first two BikeMovement journeys have raised over $70,000 toward AMIGOS’ goal of $100,000 to help young adults from around the globe attend the assembly in Paraguay.
BikeMovement Americas 2009 hopes to continue and renew this vision for a church that is relevant and faithful to Jesus Christ’s life and call. As members of this global family of God, we hope to help our brothers and sisters re-member each other in the body and to be edified by each others’ stories of service as we come together in the way of Jesus Christ.
