    High altitude:
My experience is to reduce activity to half days or half the amount you did at lower elevations for the first two days above 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) and see how your bodies adjust. Stop and sleep one night at the 10,000 foot level before going on. If you are rested in the morning go higher, if not stay at that level for a day or two before going on.
You missed out on the slower approach to gaining elevation by not going through Quito.
I have been by road (bus and train) from Bolivia to the States twice and Quito to Santa Crus Bolivia once. Bicycling most of the east shore of Lake Titicaca up to 13,500 feet and hiked above the La Paz ski area to 18,000 feet. After one of those hikes we came down with high altitude sikness and had to lay low for two days.

Check in at the Club Andino (hiking/mountain climbing club) in La Paz if you have time.

My MCC-Paz time included one and half years in Montero north of Santa Cruz and six months in the Altoplano working for the Methodist mission. They a fine secondary school and guest house close to the center of La Paz of you don’t have a place to stay there. I will check on this last info to if that is still the case.

God bless you on your travels,

    Harold

    Lars and Jon,

Awesome website. As I prepare to drive to MC USA’s Assembly in Columbus, Ohio, you guys are in my thoughts and prayers. I know it has not been easy but I’m thankful you have been safe and continue to have an openness to what God is doing in and through you. Blessings in your riding, reflections and worship.
