Track us on the map! With the wonders of GPS, we’re logging each day’s beginning, lunchtime, and ending (as possible), so you can see where we have been! These red dots are waypoints marking actual locations where we’ve stopped. Small dots mean a short stay - overnight or shorter - and larger dots mean we stayed there at least one day. The blue markers and lines roughly designate our anticipated stops and route, but are a bit straighter than probably realistic…

I applaud your commitment to the church and to the purposes of this tour. I wish you Godspeed as you complete preparations and develop the stamina for the journey.
As a fairly regular biker, I hope to join you in your departure from Harrisonburg for an hour or so. Let me know the date and time planned for this. I realize weather conditions this time of year may affect setting a date too far in advance.
Do you anticipate being able to connect with the EMU Cross Cultural group in Guatemala spring semester? Jared and Addie Leaman are in that group and would enjoy seeing you should that be a possibility.

Jay, we’ll be leaving on Jan. 6. I’ve posted more details here. It’d be great to ride with you, I hope it works out!
We’re talking with the Hershbergers about meeting up with the Cross Cultural group at some point, but we’re not sure yet how the schedules will align. It sure would be nice to see folks!

Aloha Lars,

Looks like you did well to get on the road when you did since the very cold weather is upon us in the northern U. S. May any chilly breezes you feel at your backs be more motivation to make the southward push.
One question: If you are maintaining an occasional “report from the journey” blog, I didn’t seem to be able to find a link for that, so if you could publish that more widely, I’m sure there would be interest in following along with you.

Wow, what a great update to your route map. Glad you can post your actual stops and route points with GPS. A person can zoom in and look at the satellite image of GoogleEarth to appreciate the kind of country you’re seeing. Thanks for helping us understand your route better. Great photos as well.

Lars & Jon,
Bon Voyage!! I am Jon’s grandmother’s uncle and am riding my 3rd 520. Your trek makes Ragbrai look like kid stuff. My thoughts and prayers will accompany you, especially in the Andes. Blessings to you and all you meet. You will find lots of kind and helpful folks along the way. Bob

Jon and Lars, blessings on the travels. Hope things are going well as you bike.
Jon, your mom sent me the website so we can follow along with you.
We extend an open invitation for a place to stay when you come through Guatemala. We are not far from Guatemala City, and would be glad to come collect you some place if necessary. If you travel the PanAmerican Highway through Guatemala (which it kind of looks like on your route map), you will be less than a km from our place. As they say here “mi casa es su casa.”
Espero que le vaya bien.

Lars & Jon - I’m enjoying your ride, posts and pictures and only wish I could re-join you for part of it. Riding around here (Weyers Cave Harrisonburg) is a bit chilly right now! By the way, I have a good friend in Corpus Christi at the Morgan Ave. Baptist Church. Not sure if it will be close to your route, or even if you’ll get this in time, but if you’d like a name and number, drop me a line. — Len

Have fun. I am Gordon Wenger, son of Lowell and Janet Wenger from HMC. We live near Cusco, Peru. You are welcome at our place, but we live over 50 miles off you course, over terrible mud roads. We have friends that could put you up for a night or meal, about 30 miles before you get to Cusco. I could give you a few contacts, thoughts, suggestions, or answer any questions about travel/roads in Peru. Just let me know. (wengersinperu@juno.com)

I have enjoyed reading your blog and seeing photos of places in Mexico that I have not yet been able to visit. I have spent time in Mexico and have close friends in La Ventosa, Oaxaca, a small town at the intersection of Mex 185 and Mex 190, if you need a meal or lodging.

“Hot, fresh pizza in the middle of a rainy Mexican desert” — Now there’s an image that’ll stick with you! — I doubt that that combination of words has ever been written before! (And you even had the presence of mind to take a picture of the gift before eating it! Not everyone would have thought to do so.)
Some questions as to e-accessibility on your journey: Are you able to read or add to these postings? Also, are you getting messages via the three email addresses given at “Contact” at the bottom of this webpage? Can you write back, either to individuals via email, or to the group as a whole via this site?
Anyway, sounds like the adventure is going well, and lots of connections are developing!

Jon and Lars,
OUr friends in Managua had to come home to the states due to difficulties in their pregnancy. Not sure if you were planning to stop with the Forry’s or not: perhaps they’ve been in touch with you also.
We are enjoying following along with your trip.
I was with a friend today who stated: “Either God is faithful or he’s not. You fall on one side of that statement or the other; either HE’s faithful or HE’s not faithful.” You are experiencing this in such an amazing way. And it is a blessing to be part of it!!
Vaya con Dios.

and he did - and a nice job, I think. It’s in this

I’ve been following your route with interest as it overlaps with the five auto trips through Mexico when we were operating the Goshen College SST progam in Belize. We especially remember Oaxaca as the place where we were honored guests of the town since we were the first travelers to arrive at the beginning of some sort of festival. It meant an official escort of the festivities and food on the house.
